Tan-Faced Children
By Michael Cimino
“The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning”
The large amounts of tattered, torn, soiled, and intentionally defaced flags burnt every year inspired my desire to step in as a collector of the retired flags, and exhibit them as symbolic contradictions to the pristine, saturated, spangled flags exhibited through media outlets.
With intention to overwhelm, but not to desecrate, I have worked with veterans organizations in my community to ensure that the exhibition will not cross the line into satire or humiliation. Furthermore, the United States Flag Code has been employed in the installation process as a creative foundation. I’ve found a strong interest in using the laws and conduct associated with sacred objects as creative obstacles that shape the installation beyond my own creativity."
